A Spirits and Cocktail Lovers' Tour of Toronto
Whether you prefer brown liquor or white, slushy cocktails or boozy spirit-forward classics, there’s a place for everyone to hit the bottle in Toronto.
Located on the second floor of Momofuku near the financial district, Nikai is one of Toronto’s leaders in cutting-edge cocktail techniques. Although it gets more use as a holding pen for hungry ramen-lovers waiting for a table downstairs, it’s a more than worthwhile bar in its own right and the only place to drink “Cake Punch” alongside the city’s best pork buns.

Reposado, the bar that practically single-handedly invented the tequila craze is still one of the best places on earth to get a great blanco, a smoky mezcal or a top-notch fresh Margarita, all the while listening to classic, old school tunes. The back bar is decked out in stained glass, making for a veritable tequila shrine to the best agave in town.

Ask anyone for cocktail recommendations and they’ll start with Bar Isabel. It can be a tough spot to get into, so best to go early or late and try to get a seat at the bar. Tapas and strong spirit-forward drinks rule at this hopping taberna with a lively and exciting vibe.

Thoroughbred made its splashy debut during the most recent Toronto International Film Festival, where it was a hit with visiting stars and media who thoroughly enjoyed the strong and playful drinks, including “craft” jell-o shots.

On the Ossington strip, Oddseoul resonates with the youngsters who love the noisy atmosphere, fresh drinks and Korean-American comfort food. The cocktails are simple, potent and entirely original concoctions that pair perfectly with the chefs’ Asian take on Big Macs, cheesesteaks, poutine and other low-brow snack foods.

Located in the up-and-coming Trinity-Bellwoods stretch of Dundas, Rhum Corner is a pioneer in restoring fun to the cocktail scene, with slushy Daiquiris and Pina Coladas and a range of sipping rums. No room at the bar? No worries: Have a drink across the street at the Hoof Cocktail Bar while you wait.
