Here are the Most Instagrammed Locations in North America
What do people take snaps of while away from home? This interactive site reveals the most photographed locales across North America.
Even the busiest traveller can’t resist taking a few artfully framed photos of the spectacular things and places they see, be it a stunning cloudscape from their cruising altitude, an improbably perfect sunset, or a flyby shot of an important or famed monument. Many of those photos get shared online on photo-sharing apps like Instagram, which are then shared among the service’s 300 million users.
So, when travel website Busbud recently undertook to determine most photographed destinations across North America, it turned to Instagram for insights. By searching location type and name of the most popular destinations on Tripadvisor across Canada and the United States, the team at Busbud then looked at which locations produced the most hashtags for Instagram posts. They then ranked them in every state, province and territory.
The result is a simple but engaging list of must-see destinations, ranging from amazing outdoor vistas and stunning beaches to monuments, zoos and stadiums. Keeping in mind the places that Billy Bishop travellers are most likely to go, here are some of the lists highlights.
In eastern Canada, shutterbugs are most likely to point their lens at landmarks, historic sites and bodies of water. Given all the #nofilter moments afforded at the countries innumerable lakes, that’s really not a surprise. But it’s the granddaddy of water bodies/landmarks that ranks as Ontario’s most photographed site: Niagara Falls. Out east, Nova Scotia’s Cabot Trail and Cavendish Beach in PEI get a lot of Insta-love. In Quebec, however, it seems that the local love for all things Canadiens vaulted Montreal’s Bell Centre, the home of the Habs, to the top of that province’s list.
In the northeastern US, the it’s a slightly different story. The most popular sites in New York, Chicago, Boston, Pennsylvania and D.C. are all landmarks, attractions or sports stadiums. In New York, the Empire State Building, likely drenched in that sultry sundown glow, is the most photographed spot in the state, while, no surprise, The White House bears the same honour in D.C. In Pennsylvania, the allure of the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium’s wild inhabitants make this an extremely documented place. Then, in Massachusetts and Illinois it’s a story of hardcore fandom as Fenway and Wrigley Field, respectively, top the list of most Instagrammed places.
