How Flytographer Helps You Create the Travel Photos of Your Dreams

No more shaky selfies! With hundreds of photographers in over 150 cities on six continents, Flytographer helps travellers capture the most special – and spontaneous – moments of their trip.

Picture this: You're on a trip with your spouse, your best friends or your kids, and you want a photo to capture the moment. You might ask passersby to give it a shot, and hope their skills are up to the task. You might even have a tripod and self-timer, or one of the group takes the photo – and, therefore, isn't in it. But in all of these cases, you've lost the spontaneity, and though you'll end up with photographic evidence of your vacation, it won’t really capture the moment.

Enter Flytographer, a Victoria-based business created to connect travellers with top-notch local photographers to create vacation images they'll be proud to share. Founder Nicole Smith came up with the idea while spending time in Paris a few years ago with a close friend. "All I wanted was a photo of us walking and talking and enjoying the moment," she says. "A friend helped us out and took some photos. It was the best souvenir."

With prices starting at US$250 for a 30-minute shoot, Flytographer offers full-service packages that include planning, access to (and help navigating) photographer portfolios, the photography itself, and a selection of the best high-res digital images from the shoot, sent via online gallery within five business days.

Now available in 150 cities worldwide, Flytographer not only helps travellers find quality photographers who are well versed in their local destinations, but provides concierge services too, working with customers to customize photo shoots for optimal lighting and location. "They guided me through the whole process," says Jorge Villar Garay, who hired Flytographer to document his proposal to his now-fiancée while on a trip to Chicago.

Garay, the photographer, and the Flytographer concierge worked together via email and Skype to plan the one-hour shoot, which ended up stretching to close to two hours as it was going so well. (For an extra fee and subject to availability, shoots can be extended upon client request.) He was so happy with the results, he's booked Flytographer again, this time for his honeymoon in Paris in November. "They have an amazing service," he says.

Joe O'Neill and Amy Armstrong captured their engagement in Boston using Flytographer.

For Joe O'Neill and Amy Armstrong, a photo shoot in Boston the weekend they got engaged was a chance to capture their love for the city. The couple had researched photographers in the area but settled on Flytographer (which they discovered from the website of their hotel) due to its full-service offering. "They co-ordinated everything from beginning to end," O'Neill says. "I just told them where we would be and they set up the schedule for the photographer, recommended locations – they had it all prepared."

One key feature he appreciated was being able to browse portfolios and choose a photographer – and plan the shoot – based on the mood they were trying to capture. "We wanted shots showing us happy and connected together, even affectionate, and they were able to get all that," he says.

Dara Donnelly and her musical-loving family – a group of eight, including parents, siblings and spouses – travelled from Australia to New York for Christmas on a "once-in-a-lifetime trip" that was a gift from her parents. "We wanted to give them something back that was going to be memorable," she says. In the search for a professional photographer that could follow them around the Big Apple – and with visions of spending thousands of dollars – her brother came across Flytographer. "I couldn’t believe there was a company that actually did what we wanted to do," she says. They booked a two-hour shoot and collaborated with their concierge and photography on their vision for the day.

The shoot was worth the investment, Donnelly says, thanks to the quality of both the photographer and the final product, a selection of photos they were able to share on social media, print into a souvenir album for their parents and hang on the wall, too.

"My dad's always the cameraman, and he's never in photos," she says. "For Father's Day, we printed a two-by-one-metre picture of the family in Times Square, which is now in the family home. It’s a really iconic photograph, and it was brilliant to have that time and that trip captured so professionally."
