Great Montreal Restaurants (That Are Actually Open on Mondays)

Many Montreal restaurants may take a day off on Mondays – but not all. Voilà la liste des exceptions

Remember that first time you went to Europe and got hungry at siesta time – yet every single restaurant, cafe and bar was shuttered down for three solid hours? Yeah. Montreal has its own version, and it’s called Monday nights.

In keeping with the French tradition, many Montreal restaurants close to the public for their rest days on Mondays, leaving travellers wanting. There are exceptions to the rule, however. Here are some of the city’s best restaurants that will welcome you with open arms for your Monday-night meal – some of them even serve French cuisine. Most of them are also open on Tuesdays, as indicated.

Bonus: Scroll to the bottom of this article for the days of the week in French – this could come in handy for when you encounter a sign or website with no English.

Old Montreal

Le Bremner

Helmed by celebrity chef Chuck Hughes,thisis a grown-up version of his original haunt, Garde-Manger, where the party never stops. Here dishes are adventurous and sophisticated (snow crab kimchi, horse tartare) and the mood is warm and casual. Keep room for the decadent desserts.

Helena

Bouillon Bilk

A handsome nook on the lower Main, two steps from the Quartier des Spectacles, where chef François Nadon makes creative market cuisine (beef with calamari, broccoli and oyster mushrooms, for example, or seafood gnocchi with baby shrimp and seaweed butter).

Brasserie T!

This outpost of the acclaimed Toqué is perched in the literal heart of the Quartier des Spectacles, right there on the promenade, so you can soak up the atmosphere from behind the glass wall. The dishes are bistro-style, with a focus on the quick and easy: tartares, charcuteries, steak frites – the works.

Maison Boulud

Sit on the garden side at Boulud’s Montreal home nestled within the Ritz-Carlton, and you’ll soon forget you’re in downtown Montreal. This happening taco shop (translation: You’d best reserve) on St-Laurent near St-Viateur is a great stop for second-level Latin fast food and tequila cocktails. The fish tacos are something to write home about, and there’s always a veggie option on offer too.

Comptoir 21

This original fish and chips shop was so popular it spawned a small chain. The U-shaped bar makes a fun place to saddle up for a meal of delicate battered fish with a zingy side of coleslaw. The fish sandwich is a favourite order, as is the popcorn shrimp (best paired with a chilled glass of Chardonnay).

L’Express


It doesn’t get more quintessential French than this brasserie on St-Denis, filled with history and classic dishes you’d find anywhere in Paris. Think Du Puy lentil and octopus salad, marrowbones with coarse salt and toasts, steak with onions, beef tartare with fries — and a jar of cornichons on every table.

Laloux

One of the city’s best French bistros, the stunning Laloux is somewhat of an oddity on this ugly strip of Pine, making it that much more of a glittering experience. True fine cuisine, you’ll find treats like duck with honeysuckle gel, radish and black trumpet mushroom sauce, and seared scallops with cauliflower cream, apples, shrimp and truffle oil. Mmmmm.

Big in Japan

Looking for a rip-roaring good time over an amazing bowl of ramen? This Japanese pub on the Main corner Pine is the place to be (not to be mistaken for the handsome speakeasy of the same name, owned by the same people, a couple of blocks north on the corner of St-Laurent and Rachel).

Icehouse

Lobster burritos and fried chicken served on brown paper right on the table. Need we say more? This casual Southern eatery is a friendly place to down a pitcher of bourbon lemonade, especially in the summer when the terrasse is open. Try the chicken-fried peach pie.

Park

Chef Antonio Park’s original address still reigns as one of the city’s very best restaurants, especially for sushi – easily the most inventive in town. His Korean-Argentinean roots shine through every dish; you could order a bento box or the amazing surf’n’turf for two, but the best is to get the tasting menu and just let the magic wash over you.

Tavern on the Square

This casual American style haunt on the ground floor of the famous Mies Van Der Rohe building has the darkened atmosphere of timelessness. Order a couple of martinis at the bar and relax into a long, cozy date, peppered with snacks like tuna burgers, hanger steak and a selection of pastas each more comforting than the next.

Haitian food and rum cocktails are on the menu as this no-reservations resto opened by Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Régine Chassagne, with Jen Agg and Roland Jean of the award-winning Black Hoof restaurant group from Toronto. Start with a plate of accras before feasting on goat and veggies or a whole fried fish.

Little Italy

Pastaga

Martin Juneau serves seasonal, well executed dishes as this bright and airy space just after the Mile End overpass. Contrary to whatever expectations the name and location in Little Italy may bring, Pastaga doesn’t usually serve pasta. (A pastaga is a pastis-based drink from Southern France.) Juneau serves relaxed nouvelle cuisine all the way: think small sharing plates of grilled octopus, tuna tataki, braised venison and fried cauliflower.

Dinette Triple Crown

One of the funnest concepts to hit the neighbourhood in the last decade, this pint-sized Southern spot serves meals to-go in wicker picnic baskets so patrons can enjoy their feasts of fried chicken, braised brisket, collard greens and mashed potatoes (with gravy please) in the park next door.
