Where to Find New York's Happiest Hours
A great Happy Hour isn’t so much about the prices. It’s about celebrating that perfect moment at the end of a challenging day with a lively bar full of like-minded folks. With this list, it’s easy to find those great spots and truly seize the hour.
Drop Off Service
Widely considered one of the best Happy Hours in the city is Drop Off Service’s half-price pints, 'til 8 p.m. every day. This East Village former laundromat-turned-low-key-beer-bar buzzes with excitement, not just for the discount, but also for its always excellent beer selection and neighborhood vibe.
211 Avenue A, 212-260-2914
There aren’t many hidden gems in New York’s cocktail world anymore, since the speakeasy concept, it turns out, was more of a way to generate buzz than to keep out the hoi polloi. B Flat in Tribeca is one shining exception to the rule. It’s an excellent, understated, basement bar with tasty snacks, refreshing cocktails, and uber-professional bartenders who will, on weekdays, make you world-class drinks for only $8 apiece.
277 Church Street, 212-219-2970
Okay, so it’s only a buck off beer, wine and well shots from noon 'til 7 on weekdays, but what could possibly better than discount day-drinking and classic video games at Barcade? This Chelsea bar-musement park also offers a $15 sandwich-beer lunch combo to keep energy levels up as you power through a Galaga marathon.
148 West 24th Street, 212-390-8455
New York is moving away from an era of hushed atmospheres and secret entrances and towards a new age of fun, irreverent bars where the staff don’t turn their nose up at formerly déclassé orders like, say, boilermaker shot-beer combos. Case in point: Boilermaker on the Lower East Side. Sip on sturdy and straightforward cocktails in this unpretentious bar or indulge in sumptuous wings, one shot, one bourbon, one beer. And if you get there between 5 and 8, cocktails are just $8 and beer can be had for $4.
13 First Avenue, 212-995-5400
La Biblioteca de Tequila
You ever notice how great tequila is almost never on sale? Well, now, thanks to La Biblioteca de Tequila, it finally is – between 5 and 7 on Tuesday through Friday, when tequila cocktails fetch a mere $8. Enjoy this sweet deal and spicy small plates in this elegant mid-town lounge.
622 3rd Avenue, 212-808-8110
Taproom No. 307
In Gramercy, Taproom No. 307 is an all-around excellent bar with a good craft beer selection, great bar food and a few TVs so you can always keep an eye on the game. With $5 beers and 50 cent wings 4 to 7 every day, it’s an even bigger winner.
